University participates in national faculty survey
Montclair State is participating in a national pilot study
for the new Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE), coordinated by
Indiana University at Bloomington.
Similar to the National Survey for Student Engagement (NSSE), FSSE is
exploring academic engagement from the faculty's perspective. The survey
takes about 15 minutes to complete, and is designed to measure faculty
expectations regarding the extent to which students engage in educational
practices empirically linked to high levels of learning and development.
"Responses should prove fascinating and helpful in promoting discussions
on teaching and learning at Montclair State," said Jane Zeff, director
of Institutional Research.
Provost Richard Lynde recently sent an invitation to all faculty to participate
in the survey. The deadline for responses is May 1. Faculty who have not
responded but wish to can access the survey at www.collegereport.org/faculty.
The password, which was included in the provost's invitation, is required
to access the survey. The password also is available by calling Zeff at
973-655-7677.
Responses will be anonymous, and there is an opportunity at the end of
the survey to provide feedback about the nature of the questions and related
topics to help improve the instrument.
Wrestler to be in Sports Illustrated
Wrestler Rami Ratel will be featured in Sports Illustrated's
"Faces in the Crowd" in the magazine's April 17 issue. Ratel
is the second Montclair State athlete to be featured in the section this
season. Women's soccer goaltender Stephanie Romanko appeared in the Dec.
16
"Sportsman of the Year" issue.
Ratel helped the Red Hawks to a fourth-place finish at the 2003 National
Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III championships on March
8, and became the University's 28th individual Division III champion as
he captured the 149-pound weight class. Ratel posted a 12-4 major decision
over Garrett Kurth of Luther College to finish his season at 39-0.
Named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament, he became the
first Red Hawk to record an undefeated season since Jim Sloan went 36-0
in 1993. Ratel's win total is the third-highest in Montclair State history,
trailing only John and Karl Monaco's 43-win campaigns in 1988 and 1985,
respectively. Ratel and Brad Christie posted 40-win seasons in 2000.
Ratel also received the Outstanding Wrestler Award, the seventh Montclair
wrestler to claim the award and the first since Pete Gonzalez in 1989.
Ratel finished his career with a 132-9 record, which includes 62 victories
by pinfall.
Mail Service moves to new location
Central Mail Service has relocated from College Hall, Room 112 to the
Maintenance Building, Room 211. The phone number, 973-655-4189, remains
the same.
"The change in location represents a movement to address growth and
increased customer service delivery," said Walter Watkins, assistant
vice president of Facilities Operations. "The new facility will support
our logistics, technology improvements, circulation and transportation
goals. This change will result in a mail service function that is fully
prepared to meet future and resultant demands driven by a growing clientele
and the business imperatives of a dynamic and robust University."
