Gurvinder Khaneja, Associate Director of Institutional Research

Gurvinder brings to Montclair State an extensive background in institutional research, with strengths in statistics, survey design and survey analysis. Previously, she served as associate director of Planning, Research and Evaluation at William Paterson University, and as research associate at Union County College. Gurvinder received bachelor's degrees in home science, and education and psychology; and master's degrees in psychology and industrial/educational psychology from the University of Delhi, India; and a doctor of education degree in measurement, evaluation and statistics from Columbia University.

"It's wonderful to be at Montclair State," she said. "My plans are to expand the University's fact book, develop online surveys for student satisfaction and design an Institutional Research Web page. I'm also going to work with the deans and department chairs on various research projects. I also would like to teach a statistics course. Being in the classroom will provide me with a better understanding of the students here."

Jeffrey Toney, Margaret and Herman Sokol Chair in Chemistry and Biochemistry

Jeff came to Montclair State this month from Merck Research Laboratories, where he led research in the utilization of biochemistry and chemical biology for a variety of therapeutic targets, including steroid hormone receptors and antibiotic resistance. He holds five patents on his work with protein recognition. He earned a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Virginia, and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Northwestern University.

"I've always had strong academic interests and the desire to work with students," said Jeff. "While I was at Merck I hosted several summer interns from universities, and working one-on-one with those students was so much fun. During that time I imagined that it would be nice to do that full time rather than just on the side." Read more about Jeff's research in this week's Q&A.

Elissa Lans, Bursar

Prior to her arrival at Montclair State in May, Elissa served as assistant bursar at William Paterson University and, before that, as bursar at Berkeley College in West Paterson. She's also worked for Showtime Networks, Inc. as director of financial services in the northeast region and as director of accounts receivable. Her expertise is in financial reporting, management, billing/receivable operations and bursar operations. Elissa has a B.A. in political science from Columbia University and an M.B.A. in finance from Rutgers Graduate School of Management.
