Since the launch of the capital campaign in October, Development officers have been hard at work telling the Montclair State story--from its beginnings as an opportunity institution to its future as a national and international model for public higher education.

"Members of the Development staff have been on the front lines sharing the great history and promising future of Montclair State," said Thomas Haynes, vice president for University Advancement. "We are spreading the word about why support for The Campaign for the Second Century is essential in educating future generations of students as well as ensuring the vitality of the state and region."

The $50 million campaign will raise much-needed funds for capital projects; chairs, professorships and lectureships; scholarships, teaching assistantships and student development; academic programming; and library and information technology. The campaign will culminate in 2008, the University's centennial.

Last month, President Susan A. Cole traveled to Charleston, S.C. for the first of many gatherings that will take place across the country in which faculty, alumni and friends will have an opportunity to celebrate the University's history and learn more about its future. There are approximately 200 alumni in the South Carolina area. Michael Kogan of Philosophy and Religion, a longtime summer resident of Charleston, hosted the event. Attendees included Cynthia Lepre Barnes '72, assistant vice president for University Advancement; Anne '77 M.A. and Ronald DeMuth of Charleston; Barbara '64 and Charles '64 '66 M.A. Mainenti of Hilton Head; Michele '86 and James Neff of Charleston; Carol '56 and Robert '50 O'Connor of Mount Pleasant; and Mary '73 and Kenneth Smalls of Charleston.

The gathering was the first step in organizing a Montclair State South Carolina Regional Alumni Committee. An event is being planned for late spring for all MSU alumni in South Carolina. Future gatherings will be held throughout New Jersey as well as in California, New York, Florida, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania.

"Friends of the University, old and new, are realizing that they can make a difference in the lives of students and play a role in ensuring that the educational opportunities for which Montclair State has become so well known remain available for future generations," Haynes said.

Among the loyalist friends of the University, Haynes said, are members of the faculty, staff and administration, who will be instrumental in ensuring the success of the campaign. "One of the University's greatest assets is its employees," he said, "and we will make a concerted effort to keep the campus community informed about the campaign's progress and programs geared specifically for employees."

Nancy Masterson-Newkirk, Development coordinator for Communications and Marketing, said a committee is being formed that will spearhead efforts in communicating campaign news to the faculty and staff.
