Students Win State Department Scholarships

The U.S. Department of State awarded three Montclair State students its prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for study abroad during spring 2013. Communication studies major Samara Abulebda, and biology major Adriana Szaboova went to Northumbria University in the United Kingdom, while marketing major Marisa Cangialosi studied at East China Normal University in Shanghai, China.

Sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the State Department, the Gilman Scholarship provides students with up to $5,000 toward the costs of studying abroad. Gilman Scholars are selected based on the student’s academic performance, statement of purpose, project proposal and financial need. The highly competitive scholarships aim to increase the diversity of study-abroad students and their destinations by supporting undergraduates who otherwise might not participate because of financial constraints.
