In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, Montclair State University’s George Segal Gallery will present Israel Bernbaum: Painting His Story, a special exhibit of paintings and drawings by celebrated Warsaw-born Holocaust survivor and artist, Israel Bernbaum, from February 26 – April 21, 2013.

Guest curated by Batya Brutin, director of Holocaust Studies and the Israeli Society Program at Beit Berl Academic College, Israel, the exhibit will feature murals and drawings, as well as Bernbaums’s correspondences with political figures and other historic and personal artifacts.

Bernbaum’s work has been used to illustrate several children’s books, including the award-winning I Am a Star: Child of the Holocaust by Inge Auerbacher, and his own work, My Brother’s Keeper: The Holocaust Through the Eyes of an Artist, which he dedicated to the memory of the 1 1/2-million Jewish children who did not survive the Holocaust.

The exhibit is the centerpiece of a multi-disciplinary, campus-wide series of commemorative events, which will include lectures, film screenings, children’s educational programs and other events by world-renowned Holocaust scholars, artists and authors. There will also be related programs including exhibition tours and workshops, a symposium and a Holocaust Commemoration featuring in-person accounts from Holocaust survivors.
