News Highlights . . .
At the John J. Cali School of Music, our goal is to prepare our students for successful lives with music by providing them with a world-class education, supplemented by training with world-renowned visiting artists, and professional performance experiences, including opportunities to present at renowned venues throughout the world.
Our students had the opportunity to learn from mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves, flutist Robert Dick,
jazz saxophonist David Bixler, and pianist Walter Hautzig, all Cali School of Music Distinguished Guest Artists
this year. Masterclasses were also conducted this semester by Chee Yun, Robert McDuffie and Xian He (violin), Paul Neubauer (viola) , Edward Arron and Marcy Rosen (cello), David Grossman (double bass), Ian Clarke (flute), Ilan Shul (clarinet), Rich Clymer (trumpet), and the Miro String Quartet.
To better prepare our students, the School recently launched new initiatives including a Cali School of Music concert series at the Van Vleck House; 1st Thursdays Jazz at the Montclair Art Museum; a performance by the Chamber Orchestra and the Cali Camerata, joined by the Shanghai String Quartet, at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Concert Hall on March 6; a performance at Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, N.J.; and the addition of a service-learning component to selected chamber ensembles.
The Monclair State University Singers performed Mozart’s Requiem with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra at NJPAC (read more here). Our Vocal Accord, led by Dr. Heather Buchanan, traveled to Europe last June, on a performance tour that culminated in Montclair’s sister city of Graz, Austria. Students from the School of Communication and Media produced a documentary about the tour (For more information and to view a trailer of the documentary, read the full article).
Each of these initiatives augments the already-existing, world-class education of students in the Cali School of Music. It's been an exciting year of great music making for us.
