Open to the public; all are welcome.
Reception and book signing to follow.
Dr. Marina Warner, a prize-winning author of cultural and historical criticism, fiction, art essays and film scripts, will be on campus November 13, to discuss her most recent critical work due out in December -- Phantasmagoria: Spirit Visions, Metaphors and Media. Her presentation will convey how monsters, fairy tales, and myth, both in literature and popular culture, reflect social mores and current events.
The event, "Fairy Tales, Monsters, and Myth", is sponsored by the Department of Spanish and Italian in conjunction with the Institute for the Humanties and the Coccia Institute for the Italian Experience in America, The Institute for the Humanities and the Department of English. The special event is open to the public and will be held in University Hall at 1 p.m.
Her recent book explores ideas of spirit and soul since the Enlightenment. Warner's focus in the book probes the distinctions between fantasy and deception, uncovering a host of spirit forms -- angels, ghosts, fairies, revenants, and zombies -- that are still actively present in contemporary culture.
“Dr. Warner's work is expansive and illuminating," said Dr. David Del Principe, assistant professor in CHSS’s Spanish and Italian Department.
"By analyzing how we cope with fears and, in fact, why we need them, Dr. Warner has covered a literary and cultural terrain spanning centuries. Her psychoanalytical and feminist approaches and insight are ground-breaking in the field, and have opened the door for the work of other important critics," said Del Principe.
Dr. Warner is also a novelist and an author of short stories and children's literature. She has received distinguished awards, prizes, and honorary degrees and has held lecturing and teaching posts at universities and institutes all over the world.
