Release Date: May 7, 2013

On Thursday, May 2, 2013 Dennis Bone, inaugural director of the Feliciano Center for Entrepreneurship at the Montclair State University School of Business and former President and CEO of Verizon New Jersey, was welcomed into the New Jersey Business Hall of Fame’s Class of 2013 Laureates.

Bone was honored at a special Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Renaissance Newark Airport Hotel in Elizabeth New Jersey. Proceeds from the event supported Junior Achievement of New Jersey’s statewide JA High School Heroes Initiative. Bone’s award celebrates a career distinguished by business excellence, visionary leadership, community involvement and ethical standards.

“It’s a wonderful honor to be chosen by your peers as an Ultimate New Jersey Role Model for New Jersey’s aspiring business leaders.  I am completely humbled by the induction into the New Jersey Business Hall of Fame,” says Bone

“It is our honor to welcome a true pioneer like Dennis Bone into our class of 2013 Laureates,” says Junior Achievement of NJ president Catherine Milone. The organization will reach more than 46,000 New Jersey students this school year, providing them with the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for the future, and make smart academic and economic choices.

“What’s really special about the induction is the time spent with these talented students – they are such strong young leaders, embodying the values of education, respect and responsibility as keys to one’s success. They inspire me,” says Bone.

Bone’s award – an original star-shaped metal sculpture -- was presented by New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno, who was the evening’s keynote speaker, and Michael Osuji, a 7th grade student at Lincoln School in Newark and Junior Achievement Student Ambassador. Bone and fellow Class of 2013 Laureates Edith Hunt, Chief Diversity Officer and Advisory Director of Goldman Sachs and Barbara Koster, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Prudential Financial, Inc. join a distinguished roster of 39 distinguished business leaders in the NJ Business Hall of Fame, the premier platform for recognizing New Jersey’s ultimate role models.

“A Laureate induction into the New Jersey Business Hall of Fame is a lifetime achievement award for individuals who have made a significant, positive impact on New Jersey,” says Dawn Schwartz, Junior Achievement of NJ Vice President Development & Communications. Bone was unanimously chosen by a peer selection committee. “He truly believes in the New Jersey economy and has worked collaboratively to strengthen it for more than two decades,” she adds.

Bone was appointed director of the Montclair State University School of Business Feliciano Center for Entrepreneurship in December 2012. The innovative center and its entrepreneurial development program support the University’s commitment to preparing students for success in a competitive global economy.

A high-profile New Jersey business and telecommunications technology leader, Bone was the president and CEO of Verizon New Jersey from 2000 to 2012. During his tenure, he helped transform it from a voice-driven telecommunications company into a robust voice, data and video company.

While Bone  began his 33-year career at Verizon as an outside plant engineer for New Jersey Bell, he also worked in operations, competitive assessment, regulatory matters and external affairs before serving as president and CEO of Bell Atlantic-West Virginia from 1995 until 2000.

An active volunteer, his current service commitments include chairing the New Jersey State Employment and Training Commission and serving on the boards of the New Jersey Institute of Technology, the New Jersey Center for Teaching and Learning, and the New Jersey State Chamber of Commerce. He is the founding chairman of Choose New Jersey and previously chaired the New Jersey State Chamber of Commerce. He has also been a member of the boards of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, the Liberty Science Center, the Aviation Research and Technology Park and was a co-chair of Governor Chris Christie’s Economic Development Transition Team.

“Mr. Bone is a true visionary in our state, because for so many years he has played an important role in New Jersey’s economic success,” Osuji told the induction ceremony’s 500 guests. “He wants to ensure a better future for students like me and for everyone who lives and works in our great state.
