The rafters rang at the Panzer Athletic Center on the evening of November 12 as hundreds of cheering Montclair State University students turned out for Red Hawk Madness, the kick-off event for the 2013-2014 basketball season.

Students came from across the campus to meet and welcome the men’s and women’s basketball teams and to take part in the festivities which included free t-shirts, food, prize giveaways and entertainment by the Complexions Band Dance Team, the Montclair State University Cheerleaders and the Montclair State Pep Band.

“The huge student turnout and active participation at the Red Hawk Madness event symbolizes the vibrant campus life at Montclair State,” says Executive Director of Residential Education John Delate, one of the organizers of the event. “The positive energy permeated Panzer gymnasium and will help propel the women’s and men's basketball teams to successful seasons.”

The two teams made their appearance and put on a shooting and dunking show for the crowd before they were joined by some lucky prize-winners who got to go out on the floor with the teams and try their hand at shooting three-pointers.

“Red Hawk Madness was a tremendous success,” says Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Holly Gera, the co-organizer of the event. “Our basketball teams were thrilled with the attendance and the support. Hopefully we will see as many fans at the games!”

Newly introduced at Red Hawk Madness was a supporters club called “The Red Hawk Zone,” which is open to all Montclair State students. Members of the Red Hawk Zone supporters club will receive notification of specially designated Red Hawk Zone games and be eligible for giveaways and halftime contests.

“We have seen a great increase in school spirit this past semester,” says Gera. “I think our freshmen have brought a great deal of energy and enthusiasm for campus life.”
