On December 8, 2013 the Montclair State University Department of Campus Recreation hosted its annual event, Special Friends Day. On this magnificent day the Student Recreation Center invited over 100 special needs children from the community to come and spend the day with students from Montclair State University. Special Friends Day was celebrated by transforming the Student Recreation Center into a Dr. Seuss themed story land. The windows were painted with scenes from all of Dr. Seuss's books and decorations were hung to make the building lively and exciting.
With wide smiles on their faces, the Special Friends had many activities to participate in throughout the day. The gyms were set up with sports activities, an inflatable bouncy house, crafts, and a table of iPads for the children to play games on. The racquetball courts were equipped with inflatable beach balls and bouncy balls to play with, as well as a relaxing movie room to take a break from all of the excitement. A dance party took place in the multipurpose rooms along with temporary tattoos. Last but not least, the most popular activity of the day was the pool. Special Friends and volunteers donned their bathing suits and jumped into the pool to splash around for hours on end. There was even a surprise appearance from two of Dr. Seuss's most popular characters, Thing 1 and Thing 2!
Overall Special Friends Day 2013 was a huge success at Montclair State University. The Recreation Center hosed 103 special friends from the ages of 5-21 and about 300 student volunteers from the campus. All who participated had a wonderful day playing, swimming, and making new friends they will remember forever.
