Dr. Marina Cunningham, Executive Director of the Global Education Center was awarded the MAGYAR ÉRDEMREND LOVAGKERESZTJE medal (Hungarian Order of Merit-Knight's Cross) for her work on behalf of American-Hungarian educational exchange programs.
The medal was accompanied by a certificate which was signed by the President of Hungary János Á. The award was presented to Marina Cunningham in a ceremony at the Hungarian Consulate in New York by the Hungarian Consul General Károly Dán.
Under Dr. Cunningham's leadership, Montclair State has established partnerships with several leading Hungarian institutions, primarily, The Liszt Academy of Music, Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design and Debrecen University, which involve faculty and student exchanges and academic collaborations. In 2006 the Global Education Center organized a Hungarian Festival of the Arts and Humanities, a semester long series of events relating to Hungarian culture, its origins, and its influences. The festival included over 20 theatrical and musical performances, art exhibitions, films, and lectures by Hungarian and American artists and scholars, attracting an audience of over 2000. For the festival, Dr. Cunningham received grants from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, the Trust for Mutual Understanding, the Hungarian Cultural Center of New York and the Terplan Family Foundation. Since 2001, the Terplan Family Foundation was responsible for providing scholarships to over 35 outstanding Hungarian students and recent graduates to study at MSU, primarily at the Cali School of Music. In 2009, Dr. Kornel Terplan, the President of the Terplan Foundation was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Montclair State University.
