U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius joined New Jersey State Senator Nia Gill and Montclair State University President Susan A. Cole at a press conference at the University on March 24 to kick off “Enrollment Week” and encourage residents of the surrounding communities to sign up for healthcare coverage during the final week of open enrollment.

Enrollment Week at Montclair State supports a national initiative to boost health insurance enrollment through new Marketplace exchanges (HealthCare.gov) under the Affordable Care Act before the March 31 deadline.

“I’m here in New Jersey because across the state, about 13 percent of residents are uninsured and eligible for new healthcare under the law,” said Sebelius, noting that 88 percent of all uninsured and eligible New Jersey residents are also eligible for financial assistance. “This is, for a lot of people, the first time ever that they would have affordable, available healthcare.”

“The University is pleased to be partnering with this great leadership at the federal and state level, to help ensure access to affordable healthcare for all people,” said Cole and announced the opening of an on-campus community Enrollment and Information Center where members of the surrounding community may ask questions and sign up for healthcare coverage.

Located in the Student Center main lobby, the Center will be open from March 24 through March 31 and will be staffed by volunteers of the New Jersey Chapter of Enroll America, who will provide information at the center as part of its “Get Covered America Campaign.” Montclair State student groups and organizations will also host a weeklong series of events focused on enrollment.

“We are already seeing the benefits of health reform as New Jerseyans who were previously uninsured or underinsured enroll in coverage through the Marketplace,” said Gill. “This weeklong campus event will focus on enrolling young people.”
