Five Montclair State University students have been awarded the prestigious and competitive Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad this year. The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Programs, sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, provides up to $5,000 to apply to the costs of studying abroad. A limited number of Critical Need Language Scholarships are also awarded for a possible total award of up to $8,000. Gilman Scholars are selected based on the student’s academic performance, statement of purpose, and follow-on project proposal to be completed by the applicant upon return from his/her study abroad program.
The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students receiving a PELL grant who are planning to study abroad. It aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the destinations where they go by supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints.
The Montclair State University Gilman Scholarship recipients studying abroad this year include:
Najeeb Johnson, to study in Meknes, Morocco with International Studies Abroad for summer 2014
April Schroer, to study at Universidad Veritas in Costa Rica with International Studies Abroad for summer 2014

The staff at the Global Education Center are extremely proud of our students and pleased that we have seen so many students apply for and receive the Gilman scholarship. Through targeted outreach, special sessions and partnership with the Office of Financial Aid, we hope to make the Montclair State community aware of this and other great scholarships available to help more students take advantage of the unique opportunity to study abroad.
