The sounds of poetry and the reactions of an enthusiastic
audience spilled out onto the first floor of Mallory Hall as students in the
Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) Program participated in the annual EOF Summer
Academy Poetry Jam.
Hosted by the First-Year Writing faculty on July 27, the
event is quite popular, according to EOF Program Executive Director Daniel
“The Annual Poetry Jam is a major
highlight of the Summer Academy as staff and scholars share very powerful
poetry that inspires us all,” says Jean.
High points of this year’s jam included
recitations by Class of 2019 EOF Scholars LaShonda Midgett and Damian Otchere.
Midgett delivered a poem about the educational system that led to a standing
ovation and Otchere performed a powerful monologue from Lorraine Hansberry’s
play, A Raisin in the Sun.
All 140 EOF scholars and the Summer Academy faculty attended the event.

Montclair State University's Educational Opportunity Fund Program provides access for motivated state residents from underrepresented populations and areas that meet the income criteria and exhibit the potential for high achievement.
First-Year scholars enrolling in September under the provisions of the EOF Program are required to attend the Residential Summer Academy, a rigorous six-week institute designed to assist students with the successful academic and social transition to the University experience.
