Geography major Erin Evertsen, of Montclair, was recently presented the New Jersey Society for Women Environmental Professionals (NJSWEP) Scholarship by Lisa Jackson, commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection at a ceremony in Seaside Park. Evertsen was awarded the scholarship—amounting to $1,000 and membership in the NJSWEP—for her exceptional academic record, research interests and experience, and recommendations from faculty.

"Erin has been one of the most active students in the Geography program in recent years. She's not flinched from hard tasks and courses,” said Greg Pope, associate professor of Earth and Environmental Studies. “She embodies what we've tried to cultivate in this department and I have no doubt that Erin will be quite successful after she leaves Montclair."

The NJSWEP scholarship is awarded annually to one undergraduate and one graduate student who have distinguished themselves in the field of environmental studies.

Evertsen, a member of the National Honor Society and a Dean’s List scholar, will be graduating in May 2008 with a B.A. in geography with an environmental studies concentration. She is currently working as an environmental scientist for the Applied Water Management Group of American Water.
