I-9 Dos and Don'ts

The processing of I-9 Forms, required by federal law, to verify the identity and employment eligibility of all persons hired to work in the United States, must be completed in-person by staff in Human Resources (Overlook Corporate Center, 150 Clove Road, Little Falls, NJ) for all new hires, including full-time, part-time, and temporary employees, adjunct faculty, and student workers.

When directing a new hire to HR to complete an I-9 Form please note: anyone who is neither a US citizen nor a permanent resident (Green Card holder) must first go to Aditi Patel in the Global Education Center (22 Normal Avenue) prior to going to Human Resources. Please provide the employee with a copy of the Hours and List of Acceptable Documents so that they may select which documents to present to HR to complete their I-9.

The employee has the right to choose which documents to present, provided they are on the I-9’s List of Acceptable Documents. The employee may present either:

  • One document from List A (establishing identity and work authorization); or
  • One document from List B (establishing identity) and one document from List C (establishing work authorization)

We don’t accept copied or expired documents. Employees must present original unexpired documents. The only exception is that an employee may present a certified copy of a birth certificate.
