Pay Up, an Interactive Circus of Dollars - Pig Iron Theater Company Brings “Show Me the Money” to Life March 27 through March 30

Pay Up brings you a real world lesson in economics. Part circus, part shopping experience, and part sociology experiment; this site-specific interactive performance installation challenges audiences to make difficult decisions while putting them in awkward moral positions through the power of money. Unsettling equations arise as money changes hands among friends, siblings, lovers and strangers. Based on the experiments of Yale economist Keith Chen, Pay Up gives you your money’s worth in a hilarious yet thought provoking physical theater experience.

Audience members will be given five $1 dollar bills to use as payment as they walk through a beeping, buzzing bright white installation with a carnival atmosphere. They are confronted with a series of buying opportunities as they are forced to choose from one of eight mini-dramas surrounding the dollars, navigating a series of tumultuous choices and their price tags. How much would you pay for honesty, sleep, a minute on the soapbox, some punishment or the ability to escape? All this happens as a digital clock ticks down from 52 minutes when time runs out and the carnival shuts down and the money gets counted. Pay Up is a collaboration between designer Anna Kiraly, playwright Robert Quillen Camp and 30 performers.

The Philadelphia City Paper said of Pay Up, “…let the company’s tremendous verve and cleverness wash over you. I’d say that’s the Pig Iron folks themselves treat their Magic Kingdom. …The performances and execution are in every respect, top notch.”

Philadelphia’s Pig Iron Theatre Company has been pushing boundaries since its 1995 inception. Pig Iron calls itself a “dance-clown-theatre ensemble,” and has toured all over the world. Pig Iron won an Obie in 2005 for Hell Meets Henry Halfway.
