Oneonta, NY (3/2/08) – Vito DeMola (Holtsville, N.Y.) had an impressive collegiate debut, while goalie John Meade (Fire Island, N.Y.) tallied a career-high save total as Hartwick opened the 2008 campaign with a 9-6 victory over visiting MontclairState, Sunday afternoon at Wright Stadium.
registered three goals and dished off three assists against the Red
Hawks, while Meade registered 20 saves in the victory. Steve Caramello
(Duxbury, Mass.) and Brandon Wilk (Hillsborough, N.J.) each scored twice for Hartwick.
Sophomore Kevin Dyer (Flemington, N.J. Hunterdon Central) had a pair of goals for Montclair State.
6-5 at intermission, the Hawks outscored the preseason favorites of the
Skyline Conference 2-0 in the third and 2-0 in the fourth. Caramello’s
second goal of the afternoon at knotted the contest at 6-6. Less than four minutes later at , Wilk’s second tally game gave Hartwick the lead for good. Caramello and DeMola scored insurance goals with and 16 seconds left in the fourth period to give the Hawks some extra cushion.
It didn’t take Hartwick long to get on the board – 40 seconds to be exact. DeMola opened scoring at to give the Hawks the lead. At , MontclairState’s Tyler Meixner (Hamburg, N.J. / Vernon) took a feed from Mike Corsetto (Kinnelon, N.J. / Kinnelon) and beat Meade with a man up to tie the game.
Hartwick grabbed the lead once again at 2-1 as Dan Hushion (Farmingdale, N.Y.) deposited his first goal of the year at behind Thomas Bowers (Hamburg, N.J. / Pope Johhn XXIII).The Red Hawks scored back to back goals from Dyer and A.J. Bachman (Montville, N.J. / Mountain Lakes ) 15 seconds apart at and left in the opening quarter to give MontclairState its first lead of the contest.
The lead lasted less than two minutes as preseason All-American Ryan Welch (Greenwich, Conn.) tallied his first marker of the year for Hartwick as the period ended deadlocked at 3-3.
MontclairState drew first blood in the second quarter as Bryan Klimchak (Clark, N.J. / Arthur L. Johnson) gave the Red Hawks the 4-3 advantage off a feed from Taylor Bonner (Old Bridge, N.J. / Old Bridge) at the
mark. After DeMola tied the game at 4-4 56 seconds later, the Red
Hawks regained the advantage on a man-up goal by Corsetto at . Following Wilk’s first goal of the year to tie the game at 5-5, MontclairState netted the last goal before intermission as Dyer posted his second of the year at the mark.
Bowers was credited with 12 saves in the loss.
Red Hawks return to action on Wednesday, March 5 as they play their
home and Skyline opener at Sprague Field. MSU takes on Centenary
College at 4:30 pm.
