Asimou Breaks Shot Put Record at New Balance Meet

New York, NY (5/10/08) – Junior Eugene Asimou (Livingston, NJ / Livingston) put his name in the Montclair State record books again on Saturday as he set a new school standard in the shot put at the New Balance NYC Qualifying Challenge at Randall's Island.

Asimou finished third in the event overall and first among collegiate competitors as he threw 16.70 meters, 53-feet 10 1/4 inches to break the old mark of 53-6 1/4 set by Nick Gregorio in 2001.

The mark also helped Asimou's standing on the NCAA Division III Provisional Qualifying list as he now holds both the indoor and outdoor records. Asimou was a fourth-place finisher at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March and has the seventh-best throw in Division III heading into the national championship meet on Thursday, May 22 in Oshkosh, WI.

Asimou is a three-time NJAC Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week honoree this season and was selected as the Outstanding Male Field Athlete at the 2008 NJAC Outdoor Championships on May 3. In the conference championship, he placed first in a field of 23 competitors in the shot put with a NCAA provisional throw of 16.04 meters. He also placed first in a field of 18 competitors in the hammer throw with an ECAC qualifying mark of 46.50 meters. Asimou also posted a third place finish in a field of 21 in the discus with an ECAC qualifying throw of 42.90 meters.
