– Coming off a 9-2 campaign and the ECAC South Atlantic Bowl title, the
Montclair State football team was picked second in the 2008 NJAC
Preseason Coaches Poll announced on Tuesday at the league's Media Day
held at Kean University. The Red Hawks, who open practice on Monday,
August 18, received one first-place vote among the 10 conference
coaches.

MSU finished third in the league last season at 5-2 falling to co-champions The
College of New Jersey and Cortland. Cortland was tabbed for the top
spot in the poll receiving seven first-place votes. Rowan University
(one first-place vote) was picked third followed by conference newcomer
The College at Brockport, TCNJ (one first-place vote), Kean, Western
Connecticut, Buffalo State, William Paterson and the other newcomer to
the league Morrisville State.
The
Red Hawks return nine starters from last year's team - five on offense
and four on the defensive side of the ball. Among the 55 letterwinners
back for Montclair State are the team's five captains which includes
senior linebacker Cornell Hunt (North Brunswick, NJ / North Brunswick). Also back are All-NJAC selections Jeremy Mercer (Leonardo, NJ / Middletown South) at tight end and wide receiver A.J. Letizia (Dumont, NJ / Dumont). Senior defensive lineman Nick Giangrande (Belleville, NJ / Belleville) and fullback Jason Scott (Bayville, NJ / Central Regional) round out the team leaders.
Montclair
will open its 78th season on Saturday, September 13 as MSU takes on
Wilkes University at Sprague Field (1:00 pm). It will be the only
non-conference game of the year for the Red Hawks. The following week,
Montclair will hit the road for the first of their nine NJAC contests
at Morrisville State.
