Chester, PA (8/30/08) – Sophomore forward Deana Hagel ( Fairfield, NJ / West Essex) scored a pair of goals while junior Megan Walsh ( Lumberton, NJ / Rancocas Valley) added a goal and assist as Montclair State opener its 2008 campaign with a 4-0 victory over Widener on Saturday.
Junior Justine DiPaolo ( Lanoka Harbor, NJ / Lacey Township) also had a goal and an assist as the Red Hawks posted their seventh straight season-opening victory. MSU (1-0) is also now 2-0 against Widener as it has now won four straight dating back to last season.
MSU dominated the first half outshooting the Pride 9-0 but could only manage one goal against goalkeeper Megan Purcell, who stopped seven shots through the first 31 minutes before Montclair got on the board. Walsh tallied the first Red Hawk goal of the season with 3:14 to goal as she finished off a assist from Megan Pietrunti (Middletown, NJ / Red Bank Catholic).
In the second half, Montclair State extended its lead to two goals as Hagel collected the first of her two tallies. Walsh picked up the assist on the marker at 50:19 and Hagel made it 3-0 just 12 minutes later as DiPaolo collected the assist. Last season, Hagel scored three times, including
DiPaolo accounted for the final goal with 4:29 left.
Senior goalkeeper Emina Udrjia ( West Paterson, NJ / Passaic Valley) made a pair of saves as she recorded a shutout in her first career start with Montclair State. The Red Hawks outshot Widener, 17-4 in the contest and led in penalty corners, 11-7. Purcell registered 12 saves for Widener.
Montclair State is now off until Saturday, September 6 when they host Rensselaer in their home opener at Sprague Field beginning at 5:00 pm. The RPI contest is part of the MSU/William Paterson Invitational. On Sunday Montclair takes on SUNY-Geneseo at 2:00 pm.
