Allentown, PA (9/13/08) –Sophomore defender Jessica Murphy (West Long Branch, NJ / Shore Regional) scored both goals - carbon copies of each other - as 16th-ranked Montclair State moved to 5-0 with a 2-1 win at Muhlenberg College on Saturday afternoon.
It is the fifth consecutive season in which Montclair has won its first five contests and it has now captured five straight versus Muhlenberg winning for the seventh time in nine meetings overall.
Montclair struck first 10 minutes into the contest as Megan Walsh (Lumberton, NJ / Rancocas Valley) fed Murphy off a penalty corner for the latter's first goal of the game. T the Mules (1-3) drew even when junior Nicki Notarianni put in the rebound of her own saved shot four minutes later.
The teams went back and forth early in the second half, both creating good scoring chances. Muhlenberg forced a defensive save with 19 minutes left, and less than two minutes later senior back Kristin Garbutt made a fantastic save, stopping a hard blast off a corner at the goal line.
But the Mules could not prevent a third scoring opportunity by Montclair as Murphy blasted a pass from Walsh inside the left post for what turned out to be the game-winning tally.
Senior goalkeeper Emina Udrjia (West Paterson, NJ / Passaic Valley) made five saves for Montclair State while senior Michelle Consiglio recorded 12 saves, the second-highest total of her career, to keep the Mules close.
Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, September 17 as they host Eastern University at 7:00 pm on Sprague Field. Last year, the Eagles edged Montclair, 2-1 in overtime and two years ago it was Montclair claiming a 1-0 win at home in a game decided by penalty strokes.
