Cyburt, Fischer Earn NJAC Weekly Football Honors

Montclair, NJ (9/14/08) – The first game of the 2008 season is in the books and the Red Hawks have garnered two weekly honors from the New Jersey Athletic Conference.

Junior punter Troy Cyburt (HIllsborough, NJ / Hillsborough) was named the Special Teams Player of the Week while freshman quarterback Tom Fischer (Livingston, NJ / Livingston) was named the Offensive Rookie of the Week. Both played key roles in helping MSU to a season-opening 13-6 victory over Wilkes.

Cyburt, an Honorable Mention All-NJAC selection in 2006, punted four times for a total of 179 yards and a 44.8 yard per punt average. On his final attempt of the day, he delivered a 50-yard
punt which pinned Wilkes inside of their own 20-yard line late in the fourth quarter to help preserve the victory.

Cyburt, who broke the single-game record for punting average, currently leads the NJAC in punting with an average of 44.8 yards per punt.

Fischer becomes the second straight freshman quarterback to garner NJAC Offensive Rookie of the Week honors after leading the Red Hawks to a 13-6 non-conference win over Wilkes in the first collegiate game of his career.

On the day, he completed 11-of-12 passes for 129 yards. He connected on his first eight consecutive pass attempts and delivered a 73-yard strike late in the game which led to a score after Wilkes had cut the MSU lead to 7-6.
