Volleyball Splits at Best Western Invitational

York, PA (9/19/08) – Junior Karen Martin (Sicklerville, NJ / Washington Township) collected 15 kills, five service aces and 18 digs as the Montclair State volleyball team split its first two matches at the Best Western Westgate Invitational held at York College on Friday evening.

Junior Anna Chesnakova ( East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick) had 15 kills and 10 total blocks as the Red Hawks swept Albright College in three sets (25-18, 25-18, 25-15) before falling to host York in four sets (21-25, 25-21, 17-25, 18-25). MSU is now 7-4 on the season.

Against Albright, sophomore Devon Johnston ( Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown) collected 10 kills, three aces, seven digs and four block assists to pace Montclair. Martin, Adrianne Moe ( Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) and Chesnakova all had five kills with setter Raisa Silva ( Newark, NJ / East Side) recording 26 assists and four digs. Libero Meghan Stevens ( Woodcliffe Lake, NJ / Pascack Hills) led the Red Hawks with eight digs.

Chesnakova and Martin both reached double digits in a kills with 11 and 10, respectively in the loss to York. Chesnakova added four total blocks while Martin had two aces and 13 digs as well as three block assists. Johnston collected seven kills and 11 digs. Silva had 28 assists and 15 digs while Stevens registered 16 digs.

MSU will play once more in pool play on Saturday, September 20 as they face DeSales University at 9:00 pm. Montclair will place either in the third place or fifth-place match depending on the outcome.
