Volleyball Drops Final Regular-Season Matches

Grantham, PA (11/1/08) – The Montclair State volleyball team closed out its regular-season schedule on Saturday as the Red Hawks dropped a pair of matches at Messiah College. MSU (16-14) fell to York College (PA) in four sets and then suffered a five-set loss to host Messiah.

Junior Christine Toskovich (Garfield, NJ / Garfield) had 56 assists and 13 digs for the Red Hawks, who have lost three straight.

Against York, the Red Hawks won the first set 25-18, before dropping the final three sets (25-21, 25-17, 25-12). Kara Burnham (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown) and Devon Johnston (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown) each had eight kills while Karen Martin (Sicklerville, NJ / Washington Township) added seven along with nine digs. Toskovich collected 29 assists while libero Meghan Stevens (Woodcliff Lake, NJ / Pascack Hills) had a team high 13 digs. Anna Chesnakova (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick) had five kills along with nine total blocks (one solo, eight assists).

Burnham had nine kills while Johnston and Adrianne Moe (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) each added eight in the loss to Messiah. MSU again won the first set 25-21 and took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-22 victory in set No. 3. But the host Falcons claimed the final two sets, including a 15-10 victory in the decisive set to post the win.

Toskovich had 27 assists, three aces and seven digs while Chesnkaova had six kills and four blocks. Stevens led the Red Hawks with 12 digs.

Montclair State will host the semifinals of the 2008 NJAC Volleyball Championship on Thursday, November 6. MSU, which received a first-round bye will face either No. 3 seed Ramapo or sixth-seeded William Paterson at 7:00 pm at the MSU Student Recreation Center.
