Newark, NJ (11/15/08) - Although
the game ended in a 1-1 tie, the second-seeded New York University
women's soccer team advanced to the Eastern College Athletic Conference
(ECAC) Division III Metro Tournament Championship Game by winning a
shootout, 5-4, over over #3 Montclair State University on Saturday
morning at New Jersey Institute of Technology's Lubetkin Field in
Newark, NJ.
NYU (11-8-1) will face top-seeded
Stevens Institute of Technology in the title game Sunday at 11 a.m. at
Stevens' DeBaun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, NJ. Montclair State ended
its season with an 11-10-2 record.
NYU sophomore Filiz Kipcakli scored the game-winning shootout goal, but
the goal does not count as the game goes down as a tie -- and all stats
accumulated in the shootout do not officially count.
Both teams battled back and forth, trading opportunities until
sophomore Laura Palumbo won a ball on the left flank, moved toward the
midfield around the 18, then slid a pass across to sophomore Rebecca
Assing, who one-timed it off her right foot into the top left corner of
the twine at 72:56.
From there, the Violets withstood three corner kicks by the Red Hawks
within a 38-second span. One sequence proved especially dangerous
until sophomore Katie Gaston cleared a close shot by Katie Minervini (Oceanport, NJ/ Shore Regional) off the endline.
However, Rachel Senyszyn (Succasunna, NJ / Roxbury) buried a rebound of a shot by Tina Della Fave (Bordentown, NJ / Bordentown) at 83:28, forging a 1-1 tie and setting the stage for the shootout.
Overall, Montclair State outshot NYU 13-10, while NYU owned a 12-8 edge on corner kicks.
Sophomore Alex Walters made four saves for NYU, while Gaston cleared two balls off the endline.
For Montclair State, Leah Tepperman (North Andover, MA / North Andover) put aside six shots and Della Fave added a team save.
