Junior guard Ken Dudley ( Willingboro, NJ / Burlington Tech) and sophomore backcourt mate James Williams ( Englewood, NJ / Dwight Morrow) each added nine points as the Red Hawks moved within a game of the .500 mark at 2-3 with the victory. MSU is now 10-2 all-time against Staten Island which includes wins in three of the last four years.
The Dolphins (0-4) jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the first four minutes as Christian Montervino connected twice from behind the arc. CSI would extend that lead to 14-7 with 12:02 left on a layup by Jordan Young. However Montclair would go on a 22-2 run over the next six minutes to take control of the game.
Daniel McRae ( Orange, NJ / Newark Tech) got the ball rolling with a layup and after two free throws by CSI, Alix Mix ( East Orange, NJ / East Orange Campus) and Jon Georges ( West Orange, NJ / St. Peter’s Prep) connected on consecutive baskets to pull MSU within 16-15. Richard Brown (Newark, NJ / Newark Tech) put Montclair in front with a layup and Dudley followed with two foul shots as MSU built a 19-16 lead with 8:32 to play.
Mix added a basket and two free throws and a basketball by Young swelled the lead to 26-16 before Brown sank a three-pointer with 5:49 left. Dudley capped the run with two foul shots and Maurice Torres’ ( Summit, NJ / Summit) three-pointer with :01 gave MSU a 46-26 lead at the break.
Young and Mix each had eight points in the first half as Montclair shots 52 percent (14-of-27) from the field, including all three three-point attempts. The Red Hawks were also 16-of-22 at the foul line and outrebounded CSI, 22-11.
In the second half, the Dolphins tried to claw back getting as close as 68-57 on a Charles’ Bernardi three-pointer with 5:42 to play. But Williams scored four straight and Young added two free throws before Brown added a layup as Montclair boosted the lead back to 76-57 with 2:48 remaining.
McRae, Mix, Torres and Brown all finished with eight points apiece as the Red Hawks shot and even 50 percent (27-of-54) from the field and held a 41-34 edge in rebounds. McRae and Brown each had eight boards while Mix collected six. Georges had seven points and five rebounds
Montclair State is off until Wednesday, December 3 when it hosts New Jersey City in its home and NJAC opener at the MSU Student Recreation Center. The game is scheduled for 8:00 pm.
