Women's Basketball Battles Past Baruch for Third Straight Win

Montclair, NJ (12/10/08) – Sophomore guard Jamilee Pflug ( Clark, NJ / Arthur L. Johnson) scored six of her career-high 26 points in overtime as Montclair State used an 8-1 run to open the extra period en route to a 96-94 victory over Baruch College in NCAA women’s basketball action at the MSU Student Recreation Center on Wednesday evening.

Junior Catherine Cristino ( Farmingdale, NJ / Colts Neck) pumped in 23 points as the Red Hawks put five players in double figures in winning their third straight while squaring their record at 4-4.

Kaleia Davis ( Bronx, NY / Herbert H. Lehman) finished with a double-double of her own scoring 21 points and grabbing 16 rebounds as the Bearcats fell to 5-2.

Montclair State trailed by five at 84-79 with 1:32 to play, but cut the down to one possession as freshman Jaime Ericson (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) stole the ball in the backcourt and raced in for what turned out to be a basket and foul making the score 84-82 with 53 seconds. Baruch missed an opportunity to extend the lead with a missed free throw with 28 seconds remaining and the Red Hawks got an opportunity. Montclair would misfire on a pair of three-pointers, but Jackie Berry ( Tuckerton, NJ / Pinelands Regional) was there to grab each rebound. The second carom came with three seconds left and she was fouled with 0.6 on the clock. Berry then sank both foul shots tying the game at 84-84 and to overtime the contest went.

In the extra period, Pflug converted a three-point play with 4:40 left and after a Davis free throw for Baruch, Cristino scored on a layup as MSU took an 89-85 lead with 3:53 left. Pflug added her second three-point play on the next possession to give MSU its largest lead of the game at 92-85 with 3:11 to play.

Baruch would make a run. Awa Diop ( Poughkeepsie, NY / Spackenhill) buried a three-pointer and Shadae Rice ( Brooklyn, NY / Grand Street Campus) made a layup to cut the lead to 92-90 with 1:45 left. Rice was fouled on the play, but couldn’t convert at the line and the Red Hawks would take advantage as Ericson sank a jumper at the other end as MSU led 94-90 with 57 seconds remaining. Rice would get back to the line and this time hit both to make the score 94-92 with 16 seconds however Kisandra Ayanbeku (Burlington, MA / Randolph) made two at the line with 10 seconds left to all but seal the game for Montclair State.

Ayanbeku posted a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds along with six assists as Montclair was able to overcome a 53-41 deficit on the glass. Ericson added 16 points and four rebounds while Marianne McGovern ( Fair Lawn, NJ / Paramus Caholic) chipped in with 10 points and four assists. Berry collected five points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Karleee Whipple ( Lund, Nevada / Lund) had 19 points and five rebounds for Baruch, which got a double-double from Latesha Reddick, who finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Monique Slamon ( Bronx, NY / Truman) posted 13 points, six rebounds and nine assists before fouling out at the end of regulation.

Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, December 16 as the Red Hawks travel to Riverdale, NY to face Mount St. Vincent at 7:00 pm. Baruch is back home at the ARC Arena on Monday, December 15 to take on Mt. St. Mary at 7:00 pm.
