Junior guard Santini Lancioni (Runnemede, NJ / Paul VI) added 16 points for the Ospreys, who posted their third straight victory and improved to 15-2 overall, 4-1 in the NJAC’s South Division.
Sophomore guard James Williams ( Englewood, NJ / Dwight Morrow) had 16 points and three rebounds for Montclair State, which lost for just the second time in its last 13 games. MSU fell to 11-5 overall, 4-2 in the conference’s North Division.
A back-and-forth game that featured 15 lead changes – 12 in the second half, and nine ties, Richard Stockton would get the biggest bucket of the game with 1:01 on the clock. Ahead 62-61, Hubbard got the ball along the left sideline with the shock clock running down an launched a three-pointer that ripped through the net giving the Ospreys a four-points lead. Lancioni added two free throws to extend the lead to 67-61 and after a Williams layup, Kai Massaquoi ( Lawnside, NJ / Haddon Heights) scored on a layup with 20 seconds to play for the final margin.
Neither team lead by more than the final margin over the final 20 minutes of action. Stockton would go up 45-40 with 13:35 to play as Michael Farrow ( Whiteboro, NJ / Middle Township) finished off a break. But Montclair answered with a five-point run as Jon Georges ( West Orange, NJ / St. Peter’s Prep) scored on a turnaround jumper and Siljee hit from behind the arc to play with 12:28 to play.
Montclair State would eventually take 50-47 lead on a layup by Georges, however the Ospreys countered with a 7-0 run capped off by a dunk from Isham Poe (Westville, NJ / Deptford) as Stockton went up 54-50 with 7:47 to play. From there the game would not be separated by more than three points until the Hubbard three.
The Red Hawks took their final lead at 57-56 with 4:28 left as Ken Dudley ( Willingboro, NJ / Burlington Tech) hit from in close. Stockton would tie the game on the next possession as Omar Smith ( Newark, NJ / Central) sank a free throw and then took the lead for good as Farrow converted a three-point play for a 60-57 lead with 3:26 to play.
Paul Siljee (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) and Lancioni traded layups to make the score 62-59 in favor of Stockton with 1:59 to play. Williams trimmed the lead to 62-61 with 1:38 to go as he connected on a jumper in the key.
Smith finished with 11 points and five rebounds while Farrow collected 10 points and five rebounds. Hubbard also led Stockton with six boards while Massaquoi chipped in with eight points and four rebounds.
Siljee finished with 13 points, including three three-pointers. Sean Young ( Sctoch Plains, NJ / SP-Fanwood) had 10 points and eight rebounds while Georges added nine points and seven points. Dudley posted six points and a game-high seven assists.
Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, January 20 as the Red Hawks head to Madison, NJ for a non-conference matchup with Drew University. Stockton is back home on Wednesday, January 21 to take on Rowan at 8:00 pm.
