Following the successful start to the 2008/09 season, the John J. Cali School of Music continues to present a roster of events filled with student, faculty and guest artist performances and including many notable premieres and performances.
MSU
Symphony Orchestra - Feb. 28 at 8:00 p.m.
The
MSU Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Paul Hostetter performs on February
28, with a concert including Beethoven Piano Concerto no. 4, Les Illuminations
by Benjamin Britten and The Miraculous Mandarin Suite by Bartok. Stephen Oosting
(tenor) and Ruth Rendleman (piano) will lend their talents.
MSU Wind Symphony - March 1 at 3:00 p.m.
On March 1, Columbia High School Wind Ensemble will share the stage with the
MSU Wind Symphony Orchestra in a concert highlighted by Apocalyptica by George
Rochberg, plus works by Strauss and Persichetti.
Jazz at MSU - April 22 at 7:30 p.m.
The ever-popular Montclair State University Jazz Band and Vocal Jazz Ensemble,
under the direction of Jeffrey Kunkel and Holli Ross, will present a program of
Latin jazz on April 22, featuring guest composer and drummer Roland Vazquez.

Symphony Orchestra - April 23 at 7:30 p.m.
The world premiere of The Golden
Bird by Dean Drummond, featuring instruments of the Harry Partch collection and
soloists from Newband, will be held on April 23 as part of the powerful
conclusion to the MSU Symphony Orchestra’s 2008/09 season. Also presented will
be Night Music, a composition by renowned post-modernist composer and MSU
alumnus George Rochberg and Richard Strauss's Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks.
MSU Wind Symphony - April 24 at 7:30 p.m.
Guest artist Paul Cohen will perform the Dahl Saxophone Concerto with the MSU
Wind Symphony and MSU Symphonic Band on April 24. The program also features a
contemporary piece by composer Libby Larsen, Introduction to the Moon, which
combines music and poetry.

Choral - April 24 at 11:30 a.m. & April 25 at 8:00 p.m.
The
MSU Singers & Chorale will fill the Alexander Kasser Theater with song on
Friday April 24 at 11:30 am and Saturday April 25 at 8 pm, when Heather J.
Buchanan will lead the 150-voice Chorale in Gabriel Fauré’s masterwork Requiem.
The Fauré Requiem will be performed with faculty organist Renee Louprette and a
professional chamber orchestra. The Singers will premiere a new work by international
composer Tarik O’Regan commissioned by the John J. Cali School of Music.

Opera Workshop - May 2 at 8:00 p.m., May 3 at 3:00 p.m., May 4& 5 at 7:30 p.m.
A
fully-staged presentation of La finta giardiniera (The Pretend Garden Girl),
written by an 18-year-old Mozart will cap the season and be presented from May
2-5. With Paul Hostetter conducting and under the direction of Paul Peers, the
highly-anticipated event explores passion, deception and lovesick madness, and
will be presented in the original Italian.
