Men's Basketball Beats Drew

Madison, NJ (1/20/09) – Junior forward Daniel McRae ( Orange, NJ / Newark Tech) posted a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds while sophomore guard Tom Bonard ( Westfield, NJ / Westfield) chipped in with 11 points as Montclair State downed Drew University, 74-50 in a non-conference matchup at the Baldwin Gymnasium on Tuesday.

Freshman guard Ali Mix (East Orange, NJ / East Orange Campus) added 11 points as the Red Hawks improved to 12-5 this season with their 12 th win in their last 14 games.

MSU trailed just one in the game as Gerard Mullin gave Drew a 3-2 in the first minute with a three-pointer. Back-to-back three’s from Bonard gave Montclair and 8-3 advantage with just over 17 minutes left. Drew would tie the game at 18-18 on a three pointer by Travis DeNapoli, however Montclair would score the next nine points to take control for good.

Ken Dudley ( Willingboro, NJ / Burlington Tech) hit two free throws and James Williams ( Englewood, NJ / Dwight Morrow) added a three-point play before Jon Georges ( West Orange, NJ / St. Peter’s Prep) finished the spurt with a layup as Montclair moved in front 27-18 with 7:41 to go.

Mix would later add a jumper to give the Red Hawks a 38-21 lead with 2:10 to play as MSU went into the half ahead 40-27.

Drew would only get as close at 15 points the rest of the way.

Georges finished with 10 points for Montclair State while Sean Young ( Scotch Plains, NJ / SP-Fanwood) added eight points and six rebounds. Williams collected seven points with Dudley registering three points, five rebounds and six assists. Senior Richard Brown ( Newark, NJ / Newark Tech) grabbed six boards as Montclair State dominated on the glass outrebounding the Rangers, 44-22, including 17 offensive rebounds – seven by McRae.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, January 24 as the Red Hawks head down to Union, NJ to face Kean University. Tipoff at the Harwood Arena is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
