New York, NY (1/23/09 – Sophomore Monique Riddick (Edison, NJ / Bishop Ahr) will get a chance to defend her NCAA Division III title in the shot put as she posted an automatic qualifying mark in the event as the Red Hawks competed in the UAlbany Great Dane Classic at The Armory on Friday.
The MSU men placed 24th among the field of DIvision I, II and III teams while the women's squad was 20th.
Riddick posted a throw of 14.02 meters (46-feet) as she was edged out by Leitawsha Bronson of Morgan State by three-quarters of and inch for the top spot. Still the mark would be just over the automatic qualifying mark of 14.00 which will put her in the field of competitors at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships in Terra Haute, Indiana on March 13-14. Last year, Riddick also made her way into the NCAAs by virtue of the automatic qualifier throwing 13.95 meters at the same meet. She would win the title by posting a mark of 14.14 meters on her final attempt.
Sophomore Will Brown (Gloucester, NJ / Palmyra) also hit an NCAA qualifying mark, this one provisional as he placed fourth in the 55 hurdles. Brown reached the finals after running 7.72 in the preliminaries. The time was a provisional mark but Brown bettered that in the finals as he clocked in at 7.58 seconds, just .03 off the automatic mark for the NCAA Championships.
Sophomore Farida Jawando (Colts Neck, NJ / Monmouth Regional) finished 17th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:24.88. Freshman Katherine Tallaj (Paramus, NJ / Immaculate Heart) placed 26th in the 55 hurdles as she crossed in a time of 8.98 seconds.
