LGBT Center Opens at Montclair State

Adding to the services offered to the University community, Montclair State University officially opened the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Center on January 12, 2009. A branch of the University’s Department of Equity and Diversity, the center will work to create an open, accepting, and affirming atmosphere on campus for LGBT students, faculty, staff, and their supporters.

“Montclair State University has a long history and tradition of diversity in all of its various forms,” says Karen Pennington, vice president for Student Development and Campus Life. “We are proud to add to our list of available resources, a center of support and education for our gay and lesbian students, as well as to allies and family members.”

Located in Room 423 of the Student Center, the LGBT Center is designated a GLBTQ Safe Space and welcomes all members of the campus community. In addition to a library of books related to gender, sexuality, and other pertinent topics, the center offers visitors information, referrals, guidance, and will serve as an advocate on behalf of students. It will also work closely with the student group, SPECTRUMS, and serve as a complement to the GLBTQ Studies Minor which was introduced last year.

“We focus on the unique academic, cultural, and social needs of LGBT students, and strive to enhance these students’ learning and engagement in the academic process,” says Amie MacMath, program assistant at the LGBT Center. “Through our services, the LGBT Center presents educational, cultural, and social opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to challenge intolerance and promote acceptance.”

Plans for LGBT Center activities include discussion groups on topics such as general LGBT issues, being a student athlete and part of the LGBT community, or being an LGBT student of color. There will also be opportunities for students to volunteer at the center and help build their leadership skills.

The LGBT Center is open Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. For further information about the Center and its programs, please contact Amie MacMath at x 7563 or by e-mail at macmatha@mail.montclair.edu.
