Men's Lacrosse Routs Moravian in Season Opener

Bethlehem, PA (2/21/09) – Sophomore Tyler Meth (Basking Ridge, NJ / Ridge) scored five times in his Red Hawk debut while senior Tyler Meixner (Hamburg, NJ / Vernon) tallied four times and collected two assists as Montclair State erupted for a 12-goal run en route to a 19-4 victory over Moravian College in the 2009 season opener on Saturday.

Junior Taylor Bonner ( Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) recorded a hat trick as the Red Hawks registered their first season-opening win in five years. MSU last won its opener in 2004 when it downed Villa Julie College, 11-2 at Sprague Field.

Montclair State fell behind 1-0 4:42 in to the game as the Greyhounds Jesse Peterson scored on an unassisted tally. Montclair would tie the game up five minutes later as Meixner collected the first of his scores with 5:25 to go off an assist from Mario Passafiume ( Boonton, NJ / Mountain Lakes) as the game was tied 1-1 heading into the second period.

In that second period, Bonner began MSU’s run with a man-up goal 79 seconds in and Vic DeMaio’s (Vernon, NJ / Vernon Township) scored just over two minutes later gave Montclair a 3-1 lead. Mike Corsetto ( Kinnelon, NJ / Kinnelon) picked up the assists on both tallies. Passafiume made it a three-goal advantage with 7:08 to play and then the Tylers, Meth and Meixner each netted goal in that order as Montclair moved out in front 6-1 with 1:22 to play before halftime. Bonner scored again with 27 ticks remaining to cap off a 6-0 period for MSU as the Red Hawks went into the locker room ahead 7-1.

The run continued in the second half as senior John Schiavone ( Montclair, NJ / Montclair) and Matthew Prongay ( Edison, NJ / Edison) scored 43 seconds apart in the first minute of play. Meixner would score once more and Meth twice to finish off the run as Montclair led 12-1 with 10:01 to play in the third quarter.

Senior goalkeeper Thomas Bowers ( Hamburg, NJ / Pope John XXIII) stopped 13 shots for MSU which outshot the Greyhounds 50-28 in the contest. Corsetto finished with three assists while defenseman Patrick Ferry ( Clifton, NJ / Clifton) registered two assists.

MSU won an amazing 22-of-26 faceoff attempts, including 11-of-12 performances by both Schiavone and Rober Glander ( Vernon, NJ / Vernon Township). Bonner and Glander shared top honors for Montclair with seven ground balls apiece.

The Red Hawks return to action next Saturday, February 28 as they host Hartwick College at Sprague Field beginning at 1:00 pm.
