Softball Drops Two Close Contests in Florida

Orlando, FL (3/14/09) The Montclair State softball team opened up its 2009 season with a pair of closes losses as the Red Hawks fell to Mount Union College and Simpson College at the Rebel Spring Games on Saturday.

Senior Kelly Karp (Edison, NJ / Edison) had four hits and drove in three runs in the two games as MSU dropped a 6-5 decision to Mount Union in its season-opener before falling to Simpson, 6-4.

Against Mount Union, Montclair State jumped on the board with two runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Leslie Gonzalez (North Bergen, NJ / North Bergen) led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice. After a walk to Jennifer Jimenez (Linden, NJ / Linden), Karp lined a triple to give MSU a 2-0 lead.

Mount Union would come back take the lead in the third as its scored three times with the held of two MSU errors. The Purple Raiders then tacked on two more in the fourth and added another in the fifth as it built a 6-2 lead.

 The Red Hawks would get a run back in the top of the sixth as Jimenez reached on an error, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored as Karp lined a single to make the score 6-3. In the seventh, Montclair closed the gap even further as it plated two runs. Freshman Adrian Rastocny (Colonia, NJ / Colonia) scored on an RBI double by Megan Durkin (West Orange, NJ / West Orange). Rastocny delivered the second run with a base hit and Montclair got the tying run to third base. However Mount Union was able to escape the jam with a fly ball for the final out.

Gonzalez finished was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored while Karp and Kelly Nance (Marlboro, NJ / Marlboro) each had two hits for MSU. Rastocny took the loss as she allowed four hits and five runs (none earned) in 3.1 innings. She struck out two and walked four.

In the night cap versus Simpson, MSU fell behind 2-0 in the second inning, but tied it up in the third as Rastocny collected a two-run double. After the Storm went back in front with a run in the fourth, Montclair answered with two runs in its half of the inning to take a 4-3 lead. Freshman Shannon Mozek (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) tripled home the first run and Gonzalez added an RBI single.

However, Simpson would plate three runs in the top of the seventh for the victory.

Gonzalez and Mozek each had two hits for MSU. Elia Persico (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee) took the loss (0-1).

Montclair returns to action on Sunday with a pair of games. MSU takes on Westminster College (PA) at 9:00 pm with an 11:00 am start versus Fontbonne University.
