Middletown, CT (3/16/09) - Wesleyan, ranked 14th
nationally, improved to 3-1 on the season while Montclair St. fell to
4-2 as Wesleyan built a 13-7 lead with 5:12 to go and came away with a
13-10 victory.
Wesleyan pulled away from a 4-4
deadlock with four goals in the last eight minutes of the second
quarter. Senior Russ Follansbee started the flurry by feeding both
senior Dan Latzman and junior Lonny Blumenthal with pinpoint passes for
goals before freshman DJ Bernatavitz netted his first collegiate goal
followed by another Latzman tally, this time assisted by Blumenthal.
The teams headed into the final stanza with Wesleyan still holding a
four-goal edge at 9-5. Montclair started the final period with two
quick goals, both by junior Taylor Bonner (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) with assists from senior John Schiavone (Montclair, NJ / Montclair) and sophomore Mike Corsetto (Kinnelon, NJ / Kinnelon), that on a man-up situation. That cut the margin to 9-7 with 12:34 to go.
Wesleyan
then went on another four-goal burst, the first two with a
man-advantage as Latzman finished his hat trick and sophomore Conor
Malangone netted his second goal of the game. Follansbee, who paced
the Cardinals with three goals and three assists to up his seasonal
total to 11 goals and six assist for 17 points, came from behind the
net to score two unassisted goals for a 13-7 Wesleyan lead at the 5:12
mark.
Wesleyan pulled starting goaltender Mike
Borrero (seven saves) for the final 4:49 and Montclair took advantage
to score three goals in the final 2:40 with Bonner netting his third of
the game with 1:14 left. He now has 14 goals on the season.
Sophomore Tyler Meth (Basking Ridge, NJ / Ridge),
who picked up a pair on the evening to go along with two assists, leads
the Red Hawks with 18 goals and six assists for 24 points.
Montclair keeper senior Thomas Bowers (Hamburg, NJ / Pope John XXIII) collected 12 saves on the night as Wesleyan outshot its visitor 46-28.
Wesleyan’s next game will be at Farmingdale St. Wed., March 18 while Montclair State heads to Florida to take on Clarkson on Friday, March 20 at 10:00 am.
