Orlando, FL (3/17/09) – Senior lefthander Kelly Karp (Edison, NJ / Edison) had a hand in just about everything for the Montclair State softball team on Tuesday as the Red Hawks swept a pair of contests at the Rebel Spring Games. Karp tossed a two-hitter and drove in the lone run in a 1-0 win against Anderson and then got the final two outs for a save as MSU downed Hope College 4-2.
Montclair State, now 4-2 on its 10-game trip, has won four straight and again received outstanding pitching in the two games.
Karp was the difference in Montclair’s win over Anderson. Locked in a pitcher’s duel with the Ravens’ Jessica Alsman, the senior tossed her second straight shutout as she fanned 11 batters and walked just on in improving to 2-0. Alsman proved to be just as difficult as she struck out 12 and gave up three hits.
The lone run in the game came in the bottom of the fourth as senior shortstop Jennifer Jimenez (Linden, NJ / Linden) was hit by a pitch to start the inning. She would move to second on a wild pitch and after a strikeout, scored as Karp lined a single.
Meanwhile Karp allowed just four baserunners in the game with two of them reaching second. The Ravens got a one-out single in the first and sacrifice that moved the runner over. However, Karp fanned the next batter looking to end the threat. In the fourth, Anderson put the leadoff runner on and did the same in the sixth. Each time that runner was gunned down trying to steal by sophomore Kacie Neurouter (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley).
Jimenez and Megan Durkin (West Orange, NJ / West Orange) had the other two hits for MSU.
In the second game, freshman righthander Adrian Rastocny (Colonia, NJ / Colonia) threw six solid innings allowing a hit and one run as she worked around five walks. She is now 2-1
The Red Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning as Karp line a single that was misplayed allowing her to circle the bases for the first run of the game. MSU extended the lead in the sixth as Jimenez reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second. Durkin and Karp walked to load the bases and Kelly Nance (Marlboro, NJ / Marlboro) singled to make the scored 2-0.
The lead grew to 4-0 in the seventh as MSU loaded the bases on the first three batters and got a run as Shannon Mozek (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) drew a walk to force in a run. Sam Depken (Wyckoff, NJ / Ramapo) would score on a wild pitch for the final Montclair run.
In the bottom of the inning, the Flying Dutch cut the lead in half as Kori Nieuwsma belted a two-run homer with one out. Beth Yahraus then walked to bring the tying run to the plate. Karp then came on and got a pop up and strikeout to record her first save of the season.
Junior Amanda Livsey (Congers, NY / Clarkstown North) went 3-for-3 for Montclair.
Montclair State continues it trip on Wednesday, March 18 with morning games against St. Norbert and Framingham State at 9:00 am and 11:00 am, respectively.
