Bats Come Alive as Softball Wins Twice at Rebel Spring Games
MSU wasted little time getting on the board against St. Norbert as the Red Hawks scored four times in their first at bat. Jennifer Jimenez (Linden, NJ / Linden) connected for a two-run homer, her first of the season and 38th career round tripper. MSU would add two more run on a two-run single by freshman Adrian Rastocny (Colonia, NJ / Colonia).
The Red Hawks then exploded for seven runs in the second as it send 11 batters to the place. Gonzalez had two hits in the inning, including a leadoff single to start the scoring rally. Senior pitcher Kelly Karp (Edison, NJ / Edison) helped her own cause with a bases-clearing triple. Livsey added an RBI single and third baseman Sam Depken (Wyckoff, NJ / Ramapo) drove in two more before Gonzalez wrapped up the scoring with an RBI base hit.
Rastocny had an RBI single in the third to make the score 12-1 and after St. Norbert scored twice in the fourth, Montclair tacked on two runs in the fifth as freshman Adrian Hunter (Toms River, NJ / Toms River North) blasted a pinch-hit, two-run home run.
Karp, who finished 3-for-4 at the plate, would pick up the victory as she improved to 3-0. The lefty allowed three runs and five hits in five innings before the game was stopped for the eight-run rule. Karp struck out eight and walked two.
Gonzalez was 3-for-3 as MSU pounded out 20 hits in the game. Megan Durkin (West Orange, NJ / West Orange), Kelly Nance (Marlboro, NJ / Marlboro), Livsey and Rastocny each had two hits.
The offensive remained hot for Montclair State in the next game as 12 batters stepped to the plate in a six-run top of the first. Gonzalez started it all with a triple down the right field line and scored as Jimenez smacked an RBI single. Durkin collected an RBI single as the Red Hawks took advantage of three Framingham errors in the inning.
Rastocny had a sacrifice fly in the second and Leigh Ann Murduca (Jersey City, NJ / St. Dominic Academy) drove in a run with a base hit in the fourth. Durkin accounted for the final run with an RBI single in the fifth.
Rastocny earned the win as she moved to 3-1 on the year. The freshman righty allowed a run and three hits in five innings. She struck out five and walked four.
The Red Hawks wrap up their trip to Florida on Thursday, March 19 with the final two games. MSU will face Endicott at 1:00 pm and take on Utica College at 5:00 pm.
