Women's Lacrosse Falls to Eastern in Final Seconds
Jessica Basch (Zionsville, IN / Zionsville) and Grace Griffith (Amherst, MA / Amherst) each scored five goals as the Eagles evened their record at 2-2.
Junior Lauren Adams (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) and sophomore Kayla Henderson (Succasunna, NJ / Roxbury) scored five and four goals, respectively for Montclair State, which fell to 0-6 on the season.
Eastern led 9-8 at halftime and got the lead to 15-11 with 6:49 to play as Basch scored the last of her five on a free-position attempt.
Montclair State then began its comeback as Maggie Fallon (Cherry Hill, NJ / Camden Catholic) scored off an assist from Carla Davis (Decatur, GA / Decatur) with 4:15 to go. It took just 20 seconds for MSU to trim the lead to 15-13 as Marykate DiBenedetto (Cinnaminson, NJ / Cinnaminson) scored. The Red Hawks then made it a one-goal game as Henderson scored with 1:01 to play.
MSU would win the draw and took possession and got a shot off with 31 seconds left however Cora Delfini’s (New Egypt, NJ / New Egypt) shot was stopped by Kimberly Campbell (Malvern, PA / Great Valley). Montclair would get possession back on the ground ball. Fallon would then feed Henderson, who found the back of the net knotting the game at 15-15 with 23 ticks remaining.
Eastern would get the final chance as Erin Reimel (Ephrata, PA / Ephrata) got the draw deep along sideline in the offensive end. With the clock winding down, Kristie Brownett (West Chester, PA / Unionville) fired a pass from along the sideline, finding Choquette in front of the cage. Choquette then went inside the right post past Tracey Manella (Hawaroth, NJ / Northern Valley-Demarest) for the game-winning goal.
The Eagles jumped out to a 6-1 lead at Brownett and Griffith each scored twice. Montclair State would battle back with a five-goal run of its own as Henderson and Adams each tallied twice, the latter collecting her second with 7:32 left tying the contest at 6-6. Basch scored back-to-back goals 58 seconds apart putting Eastern back in front 8-6. After the teams traded scores, Delfini scored off a free-position attempt with five seconds left as Montclair trailed by a goal at the break.
Choquette finished with two goals and two assists for Eastern, which was outshot in the game 39-35. Campbell finished with 17 saves, including four on free-position attempts.
DiBenedetto posted a team-high four assists while Delfini registered two in addition to her two scored. Manella made 11 saves for Montclair State, which got four ground balls and three draws from Henderson.
Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, March 26 as the Red Hawks host Wellesley at 4:00 pm.
