Little Falls, NJ (4/2/09) – A two-out error in the
bottom of the eighth inning allowed Montclair State to escape with a
win in the first game and freshman righthander Adrian Rastocny (Colonia, NJ/ Colonia)
tossed a no-hitter in the second as the Red Hawks swept past Hunter
College 1-0 and 6-0 at the MSU Softball Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
The wins gave MSU head coach her 600th and 601st victories as she
became the 10th coach in Division III and the second at Montclair State
to reach that plateau.
Kelly Nance (Marlboro, NJ / Marlboro) and Amanda Livsey (Congers, NY / Clarkstown North)
each had two RBI in the second game as the Red Hawks allowed just one
hit in the doubleheader in moving to 14-6 on the year. Hunter is 7-13
following the sweep.
Senior righthander Kelly Karp (Edison, NJ / Edison)
allowed just one hit – a one-out double in the first, as she retired 24
of the 27 hitters she faced in upping her record to 6-2. Karp struck
out nine and walked three, but was matched on the scoreboard by senior
Nicole Grilli (Brooklyn, NJ / James Madison), who scattered seven hits
in 7.2 innings.
After the first seven innings went
scoreless, the game moved into the tiebreaker as Arielle Zieff (Staten
Island, NY / Port Richmond) began the inning at second base for Hunter.
Karp fanned the first hitter and then got a grounder to third for the
second out. Zieff tried to advance on the play, but was thrown out to
end the inning. In the bottom of the inning, Leslie Gonzalez (North Bergen, NJ / North Bergen)
started at second and moved to third on a sacrifice. Grilli would get
the next hitter on a comebacker and appeared to be out of the inning
with another ground ball. But the throw to first base was mishandled
and Red Hawks gave Kubicka her 600th win with the 1-0 victory.
In the second game, Rastocny
tossed her first collegiate no-hitter as she retired 21 of the 24
batters she faced, striking out five and issuing three walks. Grilli
(5-8) took the loss to fall to 5-8.
Like the first game, Rastocny and
Grilli traded zeros through first four innings. Hunter got a great
chance to get the lead in the top of the fifth. Jennifer Damroth (West
Babylon, NY / West Babylon) walked and an error put runners at first
and second with no one out. But Montclair would convert a double-play
and Rastocny got a pop up to squash the rally.
The Red Hawks then exploded for all six runs in the bottom of the inning. Shannon Mozek (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) singled and moved to second a sacrifice. After a base hit eventually put runners on second and third, Jennifer Jimenez (Linden, NJ / Linden)
drove in Mozek for the first run with a fielder’s choice. Livsey added
a two-run double to make it 3-0 and Nance added a two-run double of her
own as Montclair led by five. Nance scored on an error for the final
run.
Kubicka, now in her 19th season
with Montclair, is 601-213-2 as she joined current baseball coach Norm
Schoenig as the only coaches in school history to reach the 600-win
mark.
Both teams return to action on Saturday, April 4 with conference
contests. Montclair State is down in Glassboro, NJ to face Rowan
University at 1:00 pm while Hunter is home to Baruch College in a 2:00
pm CUNY matchup.
