Montclair, NJ (4/20/09) – Juniors Taylor Bonner (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) and Vic DeMaio (Vernon, NJ / Vernon Township) and freshmen Tyler Meth (Basking Ridge, NJ / Ridge) and Chris Bachman (Montville, NJ / Montville) each scored a pair of goals as Montclair State clinched the Skyline Conference regular-season title for a second straight year with a 16-2 win over the College of Mount Saint Vincent at a rainy Sprague Field on Monday evening.
Senior Tyler Meixner (Hamburg, NJ / Vernon) also scored twice as the Red Hawks got goals from 11 different players in improving to 10-4 overall with their fourth straight win. MSU, now 4-0 in Skyline play, will be the top seed for the conference tournament which gets underway on Wednesday, April 29. Montclair will host a semifinal contest against and opponent to be determined.
Brian Zambri (Brooklyn, NY / Xaverian) and Mike Shea (Congers, NY / Clarkstown North) each scored a goal for Mount Saint Vincent, which fell to 5-6 overall, 0-3 in the Skyline Conference.
Montclair scored on its first four shots of the game and six of the first seven as it lead 6-1 after one period. Bonner put MSU on the board 55 seconds into the game and Meth scored off a Mario Passafiume (Boonton, NJ / Mountain Lakes) assist 22 seconds later for a 2-0 lead. Passafiume would get his first goal with 12:45 to play and Meixner tallied twice, the second coming with 10:22 to go as Montclair built a five-goal advantage. Meth camped off the run by the Red Hawks with a man-advantage tally with 6:59 remaining.
Zambri got the lone goal for the Dolphins in the first period as he blistered a shot from 15 yards out for a goal with 1:25 left in the opening quarter.
Bonner and Bachman each scored in the second as MSU took an 8-0 lead into halftime and the Red Hawks scored all six goals in the third as six different players netted a goal – Patrick Nann (Livingston, NJ / Livingston); Greg Fitzgerald (Glen Ridge, NJ / Glen Ridge), DeMaio, Matthew Prongay (Edison, NJ / Edison), Thomas Ring (Nutley, NJ / Nutley) and Robert Glander (Vernon, NJ / Vernon Township).
Bachman and DeMaio had goals in the fourth for Montclair before Shea closed out all of the scoring with 2:54 left.
MSU goalkeepers Thomas Bowers (Hamburg, NJ / Pope John XXIII) and Andrew Rosado (Elmwood Park, NJ / St. Joseph’s (Montvale)) had two and four saves respectively for the Red Hawks, who outshot the Dolphins 40-15 in the game. Sophomore Marc Guido (North Caldwell, NJ / West Essex) was 11-of-14 on faceoffs while Glander collected a team-best seven ground balls.
goalkeeper Mike Nuzzi (Westbury, NY / Clarke) stopped 17 shots for the
Dolphins while Ken Valentine (Centereach, NY / Newfield) and Nuzzzi had
three ground balls apiece.
The Red Hawks close out their regular season on Saturday, April 25 as they travel to New York Maritime for a 7:00 pm matchup with the Privateers in their final league contest as well. Mount Saint Vincent is back on the road for Skyline action on Wednesday, April 22 in Pomona, NJ to take on Richard Stockton at 7:30 pm.
