Softball Blanks Ramapo; Moves Into NJAC Tournamament Final Round

Glassboro, NJ (5/2/09) - Junior righthander Elia Perscio (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee) posted her second straight shutout and sixth-seeded MSU scratched out a pair of early runs as the Red Hawks blanked No. 4 seed Ramapo 2-0 in the NJAC Tournament on Saturday.

Persico (5-2) allowed just three hits, struck out one and walked one as Montclair will face William Paterson at Noon on Sunday, May 3. If MSU wins that contest, a second game will be played to determine the NJAC championship and automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championship.

For the second straight day the Red Hawks pushed across a run in the first inning. Kelly Nance (Marlboro, NJ / Marlboro) walked with two outs and that was followed with a single from Amanda Livsey (Congers, NY / Clarkstown North) sending Nance to third. Adrian Rastocny (Colonia, NJ / Colonia) then singled to shortstop driving in Nance with the first run of the game.

MSU would add another in the second taking advantage of two Ramapo errors. Megan Durkin (West Orange, NJ / West Orange) opened the inning with a walk and went to second on sacrifice and third on another. Leslie Gonzalez (North Bergen, NJ / North Bergen) then grounded out ball to shortstop that was mishandled allowing Durkin to score as Montclair went ahead 2-0.

Meanwhile, Persico retired nine straight from the third through fifth innings before allowing a leadoff single in the sixth. But that runner was erased on a double play and after the Roadrunners put two more on, she got a fly out to end the inning.

In the seventh, the Roadrunners got a one-out base runner, however a fielder's choice and ground out ended the game as MSU staved off elimination for the second straight day.

Freshman shortstop Shannon Mozek (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) and senior designated player Kelly Karp (Edison, NJ / Edison) each went 2-for-3 for Montclair State.
