Montclair State Gears Up for 2009 Women's Softball Championships

Volunteers, Staff and Alumni to host players and their families

Montclair, New Jersey -- Montclair State University is gearing up for two weeks of championship softball play when the 2009 NCAA Division III World Series of Women's Softball Championships begins on Friday, May 15 and concludes on Tuesday, May 19. The 15-game tournament will take place at Montclair State's Softball Stadium.

Eight families and individuals from Montclair State and neighboring communities including Clifton, Hawthorne, Montclair, Nutley, Pequannock, Pompton Plains, and Wayne will serve as hosts during the championships to the eight participating teams. These hosts fill a critical role in helping the players and their families get acquainted with the area, answer questions and offer advice about local attractions and restaurants, supporting the teams in their games, and otherwise assisting them during their stay. Many of the hosts are softball/baseball enthusiasts and/or active in local youth sports.

One host family has a particularly special relationship to the University: Hosts Marc and Tara (Wisz) Houser, of Wayne, are both alumni of Montclair State Athletics: Tara played softball on the 1997 national championship team and Mark played baseball on the 2000 national championship team.

"The softball committee and I are confident that Montclair State will do an outstanding job of hosting the softball championship," states Jan Gentry, NCAA assistant director of championships.

The original field of 59 teams taking place in the first round regional tournaments will be announced on Monday, May 4, 2009.
