Men's Soccer Slips Past Muhlenberg, 2-1

Allentown, NJ (9/5/09) – Senior Joseph Cullen (Clementon, NJ / Highland Regional) had a hand in both goals, including the game-winner with 16:16 to play as seventh-ranked Montclair State slipped past Muhlenberg College, 2-1 on Saturday.

Michael Cullen (Clementon, NJ, Highland Regional) had a goal for the Red Hawks, who moved to 3-0 on the season. The win was Montclair's 21st consecutive regular-season victory.

Today's game marked just the third meeting between the teams and the first in 20 years. The last time Montclair and Muhlenberg met was in the second round of the 1989 NCAA Division III Tournament when the Red Hawks shocked the No. 2 Mules, 2-0 in Allentown. That avenged an earlier 2-1 overtime loss that season.

This year's contest proved to be just like those two hard-fought battles.

Michael Cullen gave the Red Hawks the lead at the 20:24 mark as he headed in a free kick from twin brother Joe for his second goal of the season.

Muhlenberg would get the equalizer with just under 10 minutes to play before halftime as Cody Antonini (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) beat a pair of defenders before slipping a shot into the lower right corner of the goal, knotting the game at 1-1.

The Mules nearly took the lead 20 seconds later as Kyle Plifka (Sparta, NJ / Sparta) put shot on goal that was knocked away off the backline by Joe Cullen. In the second half, Plikfa produced a carbon copy of that play only this time it was Mike Krol (Howell, NJ / Howell) who came up with the big play to keep the game deadlocked.

In the 74th minute the Red Hawks would get the go ahead score as Joe Cullen booted a direct kick around the wall of defenders for his first tally of the year and more importantly the game-winning goal.

Senior Teddy Ritter (Belford, NJ / Middletown North) made one save for the Red Hawks, who were outshot in the game 17-13. Jason Daniels (Delmar, NY / Bethlehem Central) had four saves for the Mules.

The Red Hawks are now off until Friday, September 11 when they head to Colorado for a pair of games. Montclair will face Whitman College (WA) at 4:00 pm EDT on Friday at Colorado College in Colorado Springs.
