Field Hockey Races Past RPI, 7-0

Montclair, NJ (9/6/09) – Junior defender Jessica Murphy (West Long Branch, NJ / Shore Regional) scored twice and assisted on another goal as Montclair State posted its second straight victory with a 7-0 triumph over Rensselaer at Sprague Field on Sunday afternoon.

Seniors Megan Pietrunti (Middletown, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) and Melissa Buttray (Lincoln Park, NJ / Boonton) and junior Deana Hagel (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex) each had a goal and an assist as the Red Hawks are now 2-1 in the early stages of the 2009 campaign.

Sophomore goalkeeper Briana Earle (Baldwinsville, NY / C.W. Baker) made 10 saves for the Engineers, who fell to 0-3 on the year.

Montclair wasted little time getting on the board as Buttray netted her first goal of the season. Off a penalty corner, Murphy fired a shot from the left side of the circle toward the cage where Buttray was able to redirect in 92 seconds into the contest. Murphy would make the score 2-0 just over five minutes later as she blasted a shot from the left side inside the near post for her first score of the year.

Sophomore Chelsea Keelen (Middletown, NJ / Middletown South) extended the lead to 3-0 at the 32:29 mark of the first period scoring off an assist from Pietrunti as MSU took the three-goal lead into the break.

Pietrunti would convert a penalty stroke 3:15 into the second half and Hagel pushed the lead to 5-0 at 41:43 as she registered her first goal of the season.  Murphy added her second of the game five minutes later lofting a high-arcing shot that got over the head of the keeper and into the back of the cage as Montclair’s advantage grew to six with 23:21 left.

Kelly Montgomery (Ocean, NJ / Ocean Township) accounted for the final Montclair State scoring with her first goal at the 48:20 mark.

Freshman goalkeepers Megan Bosland (Boonton, NJ / Boonton) and Noell Gomez (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex) combined on the shutout with Bosland stopping three shots.

Montclair State is now off until Saturday, September 12 when the Red Hawks host Muhlenberg College at Sprague Field beginning at 12:30 pm. RPI is back in Troy, NY on Wednesday, September 9 as the Engineers host Hartwick College at 7:00 pm.
