Merkle Named NJAC Football Defensive POTW

Montclair, NJ (9/20/09) – Senior defensive end Chris Merkle (Nutley, NJ / Nutley) earned the first honor for the Montclair State football team on Sunday as he was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Merkle was outstanding as he helped Montclair post a resounding 52-0 victory over Morrisville State in its home and NJAC opener on Saturday. In the victory, he recorded eight tackles, including five solo stops. He also notched four sacks for a loss of 33 yards, and a fumble recovery during the contest in which MSU held Morrisville to just 156 total yards of offense.

Merkle currently leads the NJAC in sacks per game (2.00), and is tied for the league-lead in tackles for a loss per
game (2.50).
