McGrath Kicks Women's Soccer Past Rutgers-Newark, 1-0

Newark, NJ (9/23/09) – Junior midfielder Jackie McGrath (Vernon, NJ/Vernon HS) headed in a corner kick in the 78th minute to lift Montclair State to a 1-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference women’s soccer win over Rutgers-Newark on Alumni Field.

McGrath went high in the right side of the box to head in a cross from the left corner off the foot of senior forward Liza Offeda (East Rutherford, NJ/East Rutherford) for the game winner which boosted the Red Hawks 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the NJAC.  Rutgers-Newark fell to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in the league.

After a tight first half in which each team took seven shots, Montclair State took control of the match, taking 11 shots to Rutgers-Newark’s one.  The Red Hawks dominated corner kicks 8-2.

Raider sophomore goalkeeper Kat Renteria (North Bergen, NJ/Cliffside Park) made several spectacular saves to keep Rutgers-Newark in the fray, finishing the night with 11 saves.

Senior goalkeeper Leah Tepperman (North Andover, NJ/North Andover) made four first-half saves to notch the shutout victory.
