Montclair, NJ (11/9/09) – Senior William Griffin (Bloomfield, NJ / St. Peter's Prep) and junior forward Larry Geraghty (Cranford, NJ / St. Benedict's Prep) each played a major role in helping No. 9 Montclair State capture its fourth straight NJAC Championship last week. On Monday, the two were rewarded as they were named the conference's Defensive and Offensive Player of the Week, respectively.
Griffin opened the week by helping to hold the fourth-seeded Scarlet Raiders to just four shots on goal in MSU’s 4-1 NJAC semifinal win over Rutgers-Newark. Three days later, she netted the game-winning score for his first goal of the season while helping to hold the third-seeded Profs to just six shots on goal in Montclair’s 1-0 NJAC Championship Match victory over Rowan.
The NJAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Griffin is part of a MSU defense which currently leads the NJAC in both fewest goals allowed (11) and team goals against average (0.53).
Geraghty becomes the second different Red Hawk to earn NJAC Offensive Player of the Week honors after helping to lead MSU to its fourth consecutive NJAC Men’s Soccer Championship with a pair of NJAC Tournament victories. He opened the week by netting a pair of goals for four points in the Red Hawks’ 4-1 NJAC semifinal win over fourth-seeded Rutgers-Newark. Three days later, he produced two shots on goal in Montclair’s 1-0 NJAC Championship Match win over third-seeded Rowan which clinched the 10th conference title for the Red Hawks dating back to 1961.
Geraghty currently ranks tied for fifth in the NJAC in goals scored with eight on the season.
