Montclair, NJ (11/13/09) - The Montclair State men's and women's basketball teams were each selected to finish second in their respective NJAC North Divisions as the conference unveiled its 2009 Preseason Polls.
Last season both team captured the North Division with identical 11-2 records. This season however they were each picked to finish behind William Paterson University. Richard Stockton, the NCAA Division III runner-up last season, was an overwhelming choice to win the men's championship while Kean University received six first-place votes to earn top honors on the women's side. The women's team, which received two first-place votes, finished 18-8 overall in 2008-09 en route to the division title. Under the direction third-year coach Karin Harvey, the NJAC Coach of Year, MSU returns a pair of all-conference players from its North Division Championship squad, including senior guard Jackie Berry (Tuckerton, NJ / Pinelands Regional) and the 2008-09 NJAC Defensive Player of the Year in junior forward Kisandra Ayanbeku (Brockton, MA / Randolph).
On the men's side, MSU received one first-place vote. The Red Hawks will look to improved on their 21-7 season from a year ago, which also included NJAC and ECAC Tournament semifinal appearances. Montclair returns several letterwinners, including seniors Daniel McRae (Orange, NJ / Newark Tech) and Ken Dudley (Willingboro, NJ / Burlington Tech). McRae averaged 10.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per contest last season while Dudley collected seven points and 3.3 assists while also posting 32 steals.
The women's team opens up its 2009-10 schedule on Sunday, November 15 as Montclair hosts No. 5 ranked Scranton at the Panzer Athletic Center (2:00 pm). The Red Hawk men get underway on Friday, November 20 as they host the MSU Tip-Off Tournament at the PAC. Montclair State will take on Hunter College on Friday at 7:30 pm with York (NY) and Eastern squaring off at 5:30 pm.
