Montclair, NJ (11/16/09) – Senior midfielder Melissa Buttray (Boonton, NJ / Boonton) and junior forward Deana Hagel (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex) were both named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III South Atlantic All-Region Team announced on Monday.
Buttray earned her second straight honors as she was selected to the First Team while Hagel was selected to the Second Team. The two were instrumental in helping the Red Hawks to their third ECAC Mid-Atlantic Championship in the last four seasons. MSU finished the year at 15-6, the sixth time in program history that the Red Hawks captured that number of victories in one campaign.
Buttray earned her second straight All-Region honor as she was selected Second Team a year ago. The three-time All-NJAC selection, she appeared and started all 21 games for the Red Hawks finishing fourth on the team in scoring. Buttray tallied seven goals and four assists for 18 points and finished the year ranked 12th in the NJAC in points scored. Selected as the NJAC Defensive Player of the Week for September 14, Buttray had two game-winning goals this season and collected a pair of scores in MSU's 8-0 win against Gwynedd-Mercy College in the opening round of the ECAC Tournament.
Hagel, who earned her first All-Region honor, put together one of the top offensive seasons by a Red Hawk player in the past decade. The First-Team All-NJAC selection led the team in scoring with 39 points, a figure that ranked second in the NJAC. A three-time Offensive Player of the Week pick by the league, Hagel scored 17 goals, the fourth-highest single-season total in school history. Included in Hagel's total were a pair of hat tricks, including one against William Paterson in a 6-1 victory on October 31. She ranked third in goals and eighth in assists in the NJAC.
